  • How to buy Tesla shares in India: open a GIFT City app or overseas-broker account, send rupees under LRS and buy TSLA.
  • One share closed at US$354.72 on 16 October 2026; fractions mean you need not buy a whole one.
  • Our US$500 example costs about US$1.74 (0.35%) in app fees; the bank’s exchange-rate markup and GST come on top. Tax collected at source (TCS) of 20% applies only above ₹10 lakh of LRS remittances in a financial year.

Tesla is not listed in India: its Indian subsidiary is private, and its showrooms sell cars, not shares. Resident Indians buy Tesla’s US shares (Nasdaq: TSLA) under the Reserve Bank of India’s (RBI) Liberalised Remittance Scheme (LRS), which allows up to US$250,000 a financial year. They use an app in GIFT City, India’s International Financial Services Centre (IFSC), or an overseas broker; most sell fractions from about US$1.

Several GIFT City apps list TSLA, Platizio Global among them (GIFT City apps compared); overseas brokers are the other route.

Indian funds. SEBI’s US$7 billion overseas cap left 1 of 60 overseas equity funds open on 4 September 2026 (Value Research). ICICI Prudential’s Nasdaq-100 fund (2.83% Tesla on 30 September 2026) has been shut to new money since 27 January 2026; Motilal Oswal’s Nasdaq-100 exchange-traded fund (ETF) still trades on NSE and BSE, sometimes away from its net asset value.

Not Tesla shares. Tesla “tokens” and perpetual futures from crypto exchanges, and CFDs from offshore brokers, track the price without making you a shareholder; the tokens’ legal status in India is unsettled. Perpetuals and CFDs are leveraged and can wipe out a stake quickly, and LRS rules bar remittances “for margins or margin calls” abroad. Leveraged ETFs such as TSLL, which seeks twice Tesla’s daily move, can lose far more than the stock over a year (leveraged ETF risks).

How to buy Tesla shares in India on a GIFT City app

  1. Open an account with PAN and Aadhaar KYC (know-your-customer), a FATCA/CRS tax-residency declaration and Form W-8BEN, which certifies you are not a US person.
  2. Send rupees under LRS from your own bank account; most apps file Form A2, the LRS form, for you.
  3. Wait for the dollars: the same day to five business days.
  4. Place the order in dollars (for a fraction) or shares. A market order fills at the going price, which can gap: TSLA opened 8.8% below its previous close on 23 July 2026, after results. A limit order caps your price, but some apps take limit and stop orders only for whole shares.
  5. Trade in US hours: 7:00 pm–1:30 am IST until Friday 30 October 2026, then 8:00 pm–2:30 am IST from Monday 2 November 2026 (US market hours in IST). Trades settle the next US business day (T+1).

What a US$500 Tesla purchase costs

Brokerage varies by app. This example uses 0.29% (minimum US$1), 18% IGST and the 0.005% turnover fee of IFSCA, GIFT City’s regulator; the bank’s side comes on top.

ItemWorkingAmount
OrderUS$500.00
Brokerage0.29% × US$500.00 (minimum US$1)US$1.45
IGST18% of the brokerageUS$0.26
IFSCA fee0.005% × US$500.00US$0.03
Total app feesUS$1.74 (0.35%)

The bank’s exchange-rate markup, any transfer fee (HDFC Bank’s RemitNow, for example, adds ₹1,000 plus GST above US$500) and GST on the currency conversion come on top, in rupees, and vary by bank. The US$1 minimum makes a US$100 order cost about 1.2%. Selling costs brokerage again, and the bank’s rate on the way back is below the market rate.

How Tesla shares are taxed in India

For residents in tax year 2026-27 (Income-tax Act, 2025):

  • TCS: nil on the first ₹10 lakh of LRS remittances in a financial year, across banks, then 20% of the excess as banks apply section 394. Sending ₹15 lakh in 2026-27 means TCS of 20% × (₹15,00,000 − ₹10,00,000) = ₹1,00,000, credited in your return (Form 168) (TCS on LRS).
  • Capital gains: long-term only after more than 24 months (section 2(101)), then 12.5% without indexation (section 197) plus surcharge and cess, with no ₹1.25 lakh exemption; short-term gains are taxed at your slab rate.
  • Dividends: none so far; any future dividend would face 25% US withholding with a W-8BEN, credited against Indian tax via Form 44.
  • Schedule FA: report TSLA in your return’s foreign-assets schedule if held at any time in calendar year 2026, at any value; the ₹10 lakh Black Money Act penalty can apply only above ₹20 lakh of foreign assets other than immovable property.
  • US estate tax: above US$60,000 of US assets (about 169 TSLA shares), a non-resident’s estate can owe up to 40%.

Worked examples: ten shares sold on 16 October 2026 at US$354.72, converted at ₹95.42 (SBI’s TT buying rate on 30 September 2026, per Rule 206 of the Income-tax Rules, 2026); income below ₹50 lakh; fees ignored. Rule 206 does not say which of the two conversion methods applies, so ask a chartered accountant.

Risks to know before buying Tesla

  • Large swings: TSLA closed 5% or more up or down on 15 of the 251 trading days from 17 October 2025 to 16 October 2026; the SPY (S&P 500) and QQQ (Nasdaq-100) ETFs had none. (our calculation, Nasdaq daily closes).
  • Key person and strategy: the 10-K says Tesla is “highly dependent on the services of Elon Musk”, who “does not devote his full time and attention to Tesla”, and ties its future to autonomy and the Cybercab Robotaxi; a securities class action over Autopilot, Full Self-Driving and Robotaxi claims is pending.
  • Earnings quality: regulatory (emissions) credit revenue fell 67% in a year, to US$146 million in Q2 2026, and on 16 October the stock traded at about 328 times trailing earnings per share of US$1.08 (our calculation).
  • Currency: returns in rupees also move with the exchange rate: a weaker rupee cushions a fall in the dollar price, and a stronger rupee deepens it.
